Let’s refer to our “about page” you would understand that we originally started as an ESA/RFID security tag factory. We are a nominated factory for many big brand labels and the number one choice when it comes to supplying EAS and RFID security tags for garment factories.

However, over the years we would get asked by our buyers if we could recommend anyone to help them with kraft paper, non-woven, rept, non-woven, cotton tote/ recycled, canvas, foldable nylon/polyester, jute, backpacks, waterproof, bags, thermal paper, packaging, and other items.

We didn’t make any of these products. Luckily manufacturing was in our family blood and most of our family members were in the industry of making bags, thermal paper, and packaging.

We would turn to them for help and give them orders and they would pay us a commission. Well before we knew it, we would get inundated with more orders from referrals from our existing clients.

When we first start getting involved and dabbling in our family’s businesses, they couldn’t meet all our client’s needs, so we would turn to sourcing the products they needed.

THIS IS WHERE IT GETS INTERESTING.

Even though Chinese was our native tongue and culture, and we had connections to friends in the same industry we found it hard to get these products made properly.

LET ME EXPLAIN.

First, of all, we would negotiate the target price based on the volume of work then we would have to pay a sample fee deposit upfront as no factory will make a mold for printing on your desired material, paper, or bag, for whatever your project may be.

DO YOU THINK IT STOPS AT ONE SAMPLE AFTER ESTABLISHING A TARGET PRICE?

If you think it stops at one sample, you’re wrong, we have had 10 samples made-up for one product paying thousands of dollars, and out of those ten samples, you might get back one to two if you’re lucky that will come close to being remotely good quality and that you can use.

OF COURSE, ANYONE CAN MAKE ONE SAMPLE PRETTY, BUT FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND TO ONE MILLION IS A DIFFERENT STORY!

Well, it’s quite easy to make just one sample up but when it comes to production and producing thousands of products quality control can vary of course they’re going to make up one good sample to win your business. 

Also, after agreeing on a price and getting the final sample made up and you approve it the factory can all suddenly decide to start changing the price upon what you’ve agreed on. As they start to think that you are reliant on them and use various excuses to up the price.

HOW TO MAINTAIN QUALITY CONTROL?

For great quality control, you must monitor the staff all the time and have good protocols in place. When it’s not your factory you can’t do this, they won’t allow you to stand around all day and watch their staff and dictate to their staff what to do, so it’s out of your control.

CAN YOU HIRE A QUALITY CONTROL TEAM?

Yes, you can pay a high price to get people to go in and do quality control checks but there’s even a blind eye turned there at times, as they don’t do their job one hundred percent.

Also, quality control can get approved as people are “paid off” to turn a blind eye especially when you’ve got a large order and money is at stake.  

SO HOW CAN YOU KICK A GOAL WHEN THE GOALPOST KEEPS MOVING?

These are just some of the things that can go wrong when purchasing products from China. I have just mentioned the tip of the iceberg and could sit here all day and give you a list of things and these are big factories that are supposed to be reputable.

 It’s quite easy to find yourself in all sorts of trouble and wasting large amounts of money just organizing samples, never alone before you start, and this is in our backyard dealing with our own country.

EVEN IF, YOU GET IT RIGHT! SHIPPING AND PACKAGING THE GOODS IS ANOTHER GREY AREA. HOW IS THAT?

We’ve had goods made-up before in the earlier days and they’ve turned out good but then they’ve been damaged due to their careless packaging before shipment, creasing and damaging the goods, also not packaging them correctly suitable for various humidity levels during the shipment in the containers.

IF IT IS DIFFICULT FOR THE CHINESE TO DEAL WITH THEIR OWN COUNTRY. HOW DO YOU THINK IT IS GOING TO BE FOR FOREIGNERS?

Yes, you can hire someone to help you translate and negotiate on your behalf, but even that will be a “double whammy” because you will have to pay them, and they will try to negotiate a percentage from the factory for themselves as well and you won’t understand what’s going on because you don’t speak Chinese which will also push the price up of the product.

SO, DO YOU THINK IT IS EASY FOR A FOREIGN BUYER?

As a buyer from a large company, you could jeopardize your position or image by getting caught up in a deal that could easily go wrong for you if you don’t know what you’re doing!

As a factory, you really must be hands-on when it comes to doing this business even if you’ve got good staff and protocols in place and can implement them all the time.

As a family business, we developed over the years and slowly got more equipment and did not have to source items outside anymore, or so-called farm work outside especially when we “emerged as a group” we were in such a far better financial situation with the banks to be able to finance and leverage funds to buy the latest equipment and grow the business to a stage where we become a one-stop factory and didn’t look back and creating stability even through hard times like COVID.
